Santa Monica Welcomes Honda LA Marathon Runners and Fans to its Beachfront Finish Line

Santa Monica’s hospitality industry, restaurants, local business and retailers are set to welcome the arrival of 25,000 LA Marathon runners, and their families, friends and fans, on March 21, 2010. With the new “Stadium to the Sea” course, visitors are invited to stay and play in Santa Monica, as the Honda LA Marathon finish line and the Finish Line Beach Party are both being hosted in Santa Monica. As such, Santa Monica local businesses have teamed together to offer deals and specials for visitors when visiting for the LA Marathon’s festivities.

“We are looking forward to hosting The Honda LA Marathon runners and spectators as they finish the 26.2-mile racecourse in our community. The LA Marathon provides our business, hotels, restaurants, attractions and retailers with a great boost, while providing our residents with a fun-filled day at the beach,” said Misti Kerns, president and CEO of Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau. “The new Stadium to the Sea course has attracted many runners from near and far including runners from our top two markets, the United Kingdom and Australia as well as many other countries.  We are thankful that Santa Monica will be benefiting from the LA Marathon choosing to end the race in our city and at our historic Santa Monica Pier.”

Over 650 Santa Monica residents will run in the Honda LA Marathon, which is no surprise given Santa Monica’s active, health-conscious community, amazing weather and exceptional running paths. One Santa Monica-based LA Marathon “Legacy Runner,” Tom Philo, who has run in the last 24 LA Marathons, expressed his enthusiasm about the race ending in his hometown. “I keep running the LA Marathon because the volunteers and people along the way turn 26.2 pretty impersonal miles into a small town community. Every runner receives more kindness on race day than most people get in a year. I think most of us have always hoped the Westside could become part of the route, but this year goes way beyond anything I could have hoped for: it’s a great route, a fun route, and there’s nothing that could be better than ending up in Santa Monica. Except maybe getting there faster.”

Santa Monica CVB invites residents and marathon attendees to stop by any Santa Monica Visitor Center on race day and mention this discount to receive 50% off Santa Monica merchandise. For more deals and discounts for runners and family and friends, visit www.santamonica.com/la-marathon.

Since the new “Stadium to the Sea” course was approved in November 2009, the City of Santa Monica has put together a comprehensive parking and transportation management plan in conjunction with the LA Marathon organizers. For information on street closures, resident and business access, parking and bus operations, please visit http://smgov.net/lamarathon. LA Marathon-related issues should be directed to Ginger Williams at ginger@lamarathon.com or at (310) 271-7200 x103. Normal service requests or safety issues should be directed to the Santa Monica Police Department at (310) 458-8491.

For residents interested in attending the LA Marathon Finish Line Beach Party or watching on the racecourse during the event, the city is encouraging residents to walk, bike or take the Big Blue Bus. Bikes can be parked for free with the Bike Valet parking, which will be provided at two locations – the 1550 Beach Lot and on Arizona Ave. just east of Ocean Ave. from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m.
