AWARDS FROM THE WESTERN ASSOCIATION OF
CONVENTION & VISITORS BUREAUS

SMCVB Takes Top Honors With Two Best Idea Awards

Also Received First Runner-Up Award For The 2010 Best Industries
Readers’ Choice Awards From Southern California Meetings + Events Magazine

Santa Monica, Calif. (October 14, 2010) – Santa Monica Convention & Visitors Bureau (SMCVB) stood out from among its peers today – convention and visitors bureaus from throughout the Western United States and Western Canada – during an award ceremony sponsored by the Western Association of Convention & Visitors Bureaus (WACVB) in which SMCVB was awarded two 2010 Best Idea Awards.

WACVB’s annual Best Idea Program showcases innovative projects and creative marketing strategies submitted by WACVB members. At the 2010 award ceremony, SMCVB was the only convention and visitor bureau (CVB) to snag two Best Idea awards. One of its winning Best Ideas projects was a social media contest that was launched in conjunction with the Santa Monica Place opening and Mannequin Collective art exhibit. SMCVB conceptualized “Sandy Monica,” a British tourist, represented by a mannequin, visiting for the month leading up the Mannequin Collective art exhibit. Fans of Santa Monica were invited to follow Sandy’s adventures daily online on SMCVB’s Twitter, Facebook and website. Fans were also invited to submit an idea for a final adventure for Sandy Monica, for a chance to win a $500 gift card to the newly opened Santa Monica Place.

SMCVB’s other winning Best Idea project was the development of a partnership with Striker Media in support of Santa Monica hotels and their marketing and sales efforts. The partnership provided each of the city’s conference-style hotels with customized copies of a publication, which focused on their property specifically. The customized sales pieces are unique to Santa Monica, and have not been created in any other destination. Each of the hotel’s customized marketing materials included a personalized cover featuring a photo of the hotel, as well as expanded property highlights with additional pages in the accommodations section. This was the first of its kind amongst CVB’s.

This year’s Best Idea Program awards were presented during the 2010 WACVB Annual Conference, held October 13-15, in Salt Lake City, Utah. Following receipt of the entry forms, a Board-appointed Task Force reviewed the submissions and selected several ideas for presentation at the conference. Representatives from several bureaus presented their best ideas during the conference.

Throughout this year, SMCVB has been recognized for its many exemplary endeavors, netting them various honors and awards. One of the awards was 1st Runner Up for the 2010 Best Industries Readers’ Choice Awards within the category of the Best Destination Marketing Organization from the Southern California Meetings + Events Magazine.
