Twilight Open House in Santa Monica featuring Artist Gus Harper

By Megan Valnes

Sunset Park Realtors will be hosting a Twilight Open House event on Tuesday, March 29 in Santa Monica, CA from 6:30pm-8pm.

Come celebrate, mix and mingle with Sunset Park Realtors and friends for an enchanting evening with delightful people and fascinating art!

The open house event will feature art by artist Gus Harper. Like Pop art, Harper has focused on ordinary objects, using repetition and the flattened quality of advertising as a means of structuring the panels. Marco Livingstone’s description of Oldenburg’s work also nicely fits Harper’s paintings, “Like the best of Pop, their effect is to awaken us to the strangeness of the ordinary, to present the most routine encumbrances of our daily lives as almost miraculous apparitions.” Unlike Pop art, though, his is not a critique of capitalism or consumerism. His is not a detached view of the world. He has replaced irony with celebration. You may check out his art/bio at

Sunset Park Realtors will also be showing their newest home listing on the market, a modern 3 bedroom with a pool to die for. Megan and Stacey Valnes has provided 20 years of outstanding service and meaningful guidance in the area of buying and selling real estate to clients who require and value personal service and superior expertise.

Wine and cheese will also be provided for your appetence. Please contact us if you would like to attend at: or

10 Best Contest – Enterprise Fish Company

By Kimberly Wiethorn

My next stop on my yummy culinary journey through Santa Monica as the result of my winning the “10 Best” contest was Enterprise Fish Company.

I really enjoyed the vibe of this place. Very homey but bustling and a great place to have casual seafood in a location that isn’t super beach-casual. The menu is very extensive for both their food and many specialty drinks.  I enjoyed the Alaskan King Crab legs, which was a wonderful treat for me since not that many places serve them.

Great food, great service, I will definitely be back.  I also suggest to check out not only their happy hour but their dinner specials early in the week. I plan to check out their Lobster Dinner special!

Happy Dining!

Public “Tree Hugging and Tree Hugger Hugging Event” to Take Place March 18 in Santa Monica Palisades Park

“Hug a Tree AND a Tree Hugger” will be the theme of an expanded March 18 through March 20 Spring Equinox 2011 “Tree Hugging Weekend” that is being held to show appreciation and gratitude for our life-giving trees, as well as for the many “tree huggers” who are often trivialized and demeaned for their tree- loving and environmentally friendly endeavors.

A public “Tree Hugging and Tree Hugger Hugging Event” will kickoff the weekend on Friday, March 18, 2011 from 6:00PM until 7:00PM in the Santa Monica Palisades Park at the Children’s Tree of Life located at Ocean Avenue and Colorado Avenue, just north of the gateway to the Santa Monica Pier.

The event is being organized by longtime Santa Monica peace and environmental activists Jerry Rubin and his wife Marissa Rubin.

Event co-organizer Jerry Rubin says, “I’m a tree hugger and proud of it. It’s time to bring tree hugging back by popular demand. The Spring Equinox weekend is a great time to honor trees and Mother Nature”.

Event co-organizer Marissa Rubin says, “Everyone is invited to join us at the kickoff public event, but anyone can give a nice hug to some trees- and some tree huggers- anywhere and everywhere during this special weekend. And, like Earth Day, this is something that can always be celebrated any day and everyday”.

10 Best Contest – Zengo

By Kimberly Wiethorn

If  you haven’t gotten out and explored Santa Monica Place – both its shopping and it’s restaurants- you are missing out!

For my second stop using my prize for the Santa Monica 10 Best contest, I had the pleasure of taking a friend and trying Zengo, which is located on the roof of Santa Monica Place.

Although I’m an avid foodie, I sometimes can be skeptical of certain “fusion” cuisines. It can occasionally be too much going on and mask the food but I absolutely loved the Latin- Asian fare Zengo served. We went on an evening and sat in one of the spacious booths on the patio and indulged in a number of their dim sum dishes.  Some of my favorites were  the XO style Edamame, Thai Chicken Empanadas, Shrimp-Vegetable Potstickers,  Charred Tuna wonton tacos, and the lettuce wraps.  The crispy tofu was one of the best tofu dishes I’ve ever had and the sauce
was so flavorful.

I highly recommend checking out this spot- I know I will definitely be back and I might not have tried it if it weren’t for!

Don’t forget, the restaurants in Santa Monica Place offer complimentary valet  for up to 3 hours if you dine there- so it’s convenient even if you aren’t a local like me!
