  • Learn how to overcome reluctance to act in emergency situations.
  • Learn to recognize and care for life-threatening respiratory or cardiac emergencies.

Participants should arrive and check in 15 minutes before their class is scheduled to start.

Local LA Designers Come Together for Unique LA Summer Event

Unique LA, the largest independent design show in the country is making it’s Westside debut in Santa Monica at the Barker Hangar.

This summer, instead of heading to the mall to scratch your shopping itch with mass-produced products and made overseas brands, get the rare chance to meet and shop directly from over 250 local hand-selected designers and artists.

The exciting two-day shopping event on July 30 and 31st makes it easy to support LA’s economy and discover great design and deals.

Surf’s Up! at Annenberg Community Beach House

Get wet at the Beach House! There’s a lot to discover in the water and on the land at our SURF’S UP! event.  From 10 a.m. – 2 p.m. enjoy sea shanties with musical group Machine Project plus Big Bubbles, Fun in the Sun chalk art and coloring, Twister, Ladder Ball, Disc Golf and summer safety tips with Los Angeles County Lifeguards. At 1 p.m. experience our first ever Standup Group Paddle and Demonstration, for free! The Marion Davies Guest House will be open 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. with complimentary tours at 11 a.m., noon and 1 p.m.  The pool will be open 10 a.m. – 6 p.m. Regular pool rates apply; $4 youth (1-17), $10 adults, $5 seniors (60+), $24 family pass (two adults & two youth), and regular Fitness Room rates apply; $7, or $5 with the purchase of a same day full price activity, with all other fun free to the public. Parking is $10 per day or bike to the Beach House. Pool and parking reservations are available, but not required, up to three days in advance.

Now through Labor Day, there’s plenty of opportunity to soak it in, work it out or play it up at the Beach House. With daily pool hours, Dollar Splash Monday, Pool Power Hours, Sand & Sea Fitness Room and Beach=Culture events, plus new activities including Monday Fun Day, Beach Games and the Game Room, the Beach House is a summer destination not to be missed.

First come, first served pool passes go on sale daily at Guest Services starting at 9:30 a.m. Limited pool reservations are available, but not required, Tuesdays – Sundays, and limited parking reservations are available daily. Make your reservations online up to three days in advance. Canopies on the sand are available for reservation up to two weeks in advance.  Standup paddleboard rentals are available daily, no reservation required.

As featured in Marie Claire’s July issue, synchronized swimming with the Aqualillies is Hollywood’s Hot New Fitness Craze! Check out a class at the heated, historic Beach House pool on Sundays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays.  More summer inspired classes include Standup Paddleboarding, Snorkeling and Open Ocean Swimming, along with the ever-popular Yoga for youth and adults and Beach Volleyball. Beach House grounds will be open daily from 8:30 a.m. – 8:30 p.m. including courtyards, view deck, splash pad, accessible play area and special hours for the Gallery and Guest House tours. Missy Higgins Headlines Australia Rocks the Pier 7/21

Australia Rocks The Pier returns on Thursday, July 21st @7-10pm for a night of all-Australian music featuring Missy Higgins, Kim Churchill and Andy Clockwise.  The concert, sponsored by the Australian Consulate-General, Cotton On, Tourism New South Wales (NSW), and V Australia is part of the Santa Monica Pier’s Twilight Dance Series of free Thursday night concerts throughout the summer.

Missy Higgins has enjoyed phenomenal success with her irresistible melodies and heartfelt lyrics. The Los Angeles Times raves, “Missy Higgins has that radiance performers exude just as their stars begin to ascend” and Variety gushes that Missy writes “quality songs with cultural resonance – a true rarity in modern music.” After touring the globe with her unforgettable live performances, Missy’s highly acclaimed albums The Sound Of White featuring hit singles “Scar” and “Ten Days” and On A Clear Night featuring hits “Where I Stood” and “Steer” have sold over two million copies, landing Missy on the cover of Australian Rolling Stone magazine twice before she turned 25.  Missy is currently recording a new album scheduled for release in early 2012 with Nashville-based producer Brad Jones (Ron Sexsmith, Jill Sobule) and co-producer Australian musician Butterfly Boucher.

Kim Churchill’s soulful voice and beautiful harmonica melodies are indicative of his
explosive style. With his trademark intricate fingerpicking and percussive beats on the body of the guitar combined with two-handed tapping intertwined with an earthy stomp box, he is a musical powerhouse. His songwriting reflects his coastal lifestyle with the surf at his front door and his nomadic life on the road.

Andy Clockwise is a Los Angeles-based Australian indie-rock import whose electric and raucous live shows have become a staple on the indie-rock scene. Clockwise’s U.S. debut album The Socialite, released in April, has received critical acclaim. Clearly influenced by the likes of Nick Cave, Bob Dylan, Prince and Tom Waits, Clockwise blends rock, pop, synth and punk into self-described “schizo pop.” His local success came after achieving national triumphs Down Under, including steady radio play and tours with bands like INXS and The Strokes’ Julian Casablancas.

Australia Rocks the Pier is an exciting sampling of Australian contemporary music that will appeal, intrigue and broaden perspectives of Australia’s diversity, talent and culture. Last year beloved cult singer-songwriter Ben Lee headlined a memorable night of Australian music along with rising star Ry Cuming and celtic didgeridoo fusion band Brother for a crowd of over 10,000.

Cinema on the Street

Downtown Santa Monica is proud to present “Cinema on the Street,” a new series of weekly summertime movies debuting on Third Street Promenade in July!

Come and unwind in a unique outdoor setting under the stars. Bring a blanket or beach chairs, a date, family and friends to enjoy your favorite classic movies! The outdoor movie screen will be located on Third Street Promenade between Wilshire and Arizona Avenue, just outside Chipotle. Movies begin each night at approximately 7:30pm. Time subject to change depending on sunset.

Attendance is free. Parking is available in city parking structures 1-9 throughout Downtown Santa Monica. Vehicles entering after 6pm pay a $5.00 flat rate.

The schedule of outdoor movies is as follows:

Watching it silent without music got to be tiring, so he went to the piano and started accompanying the story with improv music. Sparks flew – the sky lit up – Rick was transported to the world of improv music for silent movies – never to return.

Twilight Dance Series Returns to Santa Monica Pier

Now in its 27th year, the Twilight Dance Series, a production of the Santa Monica Pier Restoration Corporation, will again present ten free concerts on the deck of the Santa Monica Pier this year, beginning July 7, 2011. The concerts, presented by OneWest Bank, FSB, the largest Southern California headquartered bank, will feature high-profile artists from all over the world, every Thursday night, from 7 pm to 10 pm, bringing Southern California a treasured weekly live music experience.

Each Thursday night the highly attended concert series will showcase a different musical theme: The SaMo Mambo: Salsa, ‘80s Pop, Australia Rocks the Pier!, Reggae/Ska, La Monica Ballroom Then & Now, Making Waves: A Night of Surf Guitar, Tango on the Timbers, Americana, and New Orleans Funk and Blues. The Twilight Dance Series is co-produced by Los Angeles-based Rum & Humble, known for presenting both established artists and homegrown talent in venues such as the Hollywood Bowl and Greek Theatre.
