Rainbow Serpent, by Jose Ponce
Otis College of Art students, in partnership with the Santa Monica Pier Aquarium, researched mythological creatures to show how different cultures – ancient and modern – used these creatures to create meaning in the sea as well as foster inspiration and conservation. You can join the students of Otis College of Art and Design as they discuss “The Divine Seas,” an exhibition of illustrations and mythological stories of sea creatures.
The exhibition is the culmination of a 15-week course, “Beasts of Myth and Fancy,” taught by Professor Flores-Pena. The exhibition shows how differently each culture treats the ocean, with a goal to bring the ocean to life, instilling an ancient cultural level of respect in people of the modern world. Come check out the artwork, learn about these mythical creatures and connect with the modern day creatures of the Santa Monica Bay on exhibit at the Aquarium.
